Sasol Mining, which operates one of the largest underground coal complexes in the world at Secunda, in Mpumalanga, is ensuring the uninterrupted supply of 40-million tons of coal a year to its Sasol Synfuels operations by commissioning the Thubelisha, Impumelelo, Shondoni and Tweedraai mines to replace the long-serving Twistdraai, Brandspruit, Middelbult and part of the Syferfontein operations, which are nearing the end of their economic lives. Shondoni, pictured above, which has a capacity of 10.5-million tons a year, is 94% complete, with the second phase of the underground development scheduled for completion in September. Shondoni’s 21 km single-flight conveyer is the world’s longest without a booster drive.
