RBPlat reports second fatality in a week
JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – In its second fatality reported this week, platinum producer Royal Bafokeng Platinum (RBPlat) said on Friday that a worker had died following an underground accident at the Bafokeng Rasimone Platinum Mine’s South shaft.
Locomotive operator Refumane Petrose Kanono, who was employed by contractor JIC Mining Services, was fatally injured when he was trapped by a ventilation door on Friday morning.
This came days after mine contractor Shaft Sinkers stage hand Xadreque Chihungo was fatally injured at the company’s Styldrift I project, in the North West, following a shaft-related incident on Saturday.
All normal underground operations at both operations had been suspended pending a full investigation into the incidents, which had already started in conjunction with the Department of Mineral Resources.
RBPlat extended its sincere condolences to both men’s family and friends.
