South African pump manufacturer Hazleton Pumps received its fourth Technology Top 100 (TT100) award, in November 2011.

TT100 is a division of the Da Vinci Institute, a school of management specialising in technology, innovation, people and systems. The awards have been presented in collaboration with the South African Department of Science and Technology for the past 20 years.

The awards are determined by the institute’s evaluation of companies in different categories according to innovations, as well as how they maintain and use technology.

Hazleton participates in such evaluations to benchmark itself and see where improvements can be made and where new opportunities can be identified, says Hazleton Pumps director Niël Wehmeyer.

Hazleton Pumps Product Offering

Hazleton Pumps specialises in the design and development, as well as the manufacture of, the Hippo slurry pump range – a pumping system suited to South African mining sector needs and that deals with dewatering and slurry applications .

As the South African mining industry is a global leader in the mining sector worldwide, the successful application of the Hippo pumps range created a demand for these products worldwide.

Based on this experience, Hazleton Pumps designed and manufactured the largest vertical spindle slurry froth pump in the world, which was exported to Russia. It also led to the devel- opment of the first medium-voltage (6.6 kw) submersible pump, which has been exported worldwide, particularly to Canada where it is applied under strenuous conditions in the oil sands industry.

Awards

Since participating in the TT100 programme for the first time in 2001, Hazleton Pumps has entered every year.

In 2002, the company won the Technology Excellence Award in the small enterprise section. In 2006 and 2009, it won the prestigious Minister’s Award and, in 2011, it was the winner of the Manage- ment of Research Award.

“The TT100 awards Hazleton Pumps has received reflect the work and dedication the company puts into its product ranges. It is a reflection of what Hazleton Pumps has accomplished and of things to come in the future,” says Wehmeyer.
