The participation of new Platmin chairperson Brian Gilbertson and vocal platinum aspirant and Xstrata CEO Mick Davis in the platinum-mining industry has set off a series of comments from mining analysts, the most notable coming from RBC Capital mining analyst Leon Esterhuizen, who predicts that the two will turn the industry on its head. The New Year may bring an indication of what else Gilbertson and Davis will do in platinum. In the meantime, the still tiny Platmin stable says that its "glass is still only half full" when it comes to platinum, and Davis continues to operate on a small scale in platinum at low cost, while holding a strategic stake in Lonmin and continuing to eye Anglo American as a whole, which has the huge Anglo Platinum in tow.
