National oil company (NOC) PetroSA on Friday unveiled its R15-million geoscience collaboration, visualisation and technology facility, which is aimed at bolstering the NOC’s upstream asset team’s search for, and development of, oil and gas prospects.

The Ulwazi Collaboration and Visualisation Centre will enable the monitoring and guiding of the drilling operations of Project Ikhwezi, while providing a platform to accelerate and inform operational decision-making on its drilling projects.

“Collaboration between our multidisciplinary subsurface teams in Ulwazi furthers our understanding and description of geological structures and reservoirs, which lead to improved decision-making in areas such as well placement, field development planning and reserves estimates,” PetroSA CEO Nosizwe Nokwe-Macamo said in a statement.

The Cape Town-based centre hosts the latest visualisation and collaboration equipment, enabling the transfer of seismic and geological data into detailed, three-dimensional views of subsurface formations.

“The effective use of this facility ensures that collaborative, multidisciplinary evaluations of new drilling information and drilling events are done efficiently prior to responding to the event,” she added.

The Ulwazi centre would also play a role in training PetroSA’s next generation of upstream professionals.
