Honeymoon, which will produce 880 000 lb/y of uranium at full capacity, will be Australia's fourth uranium mine.
Government approval was received for the mining and rehabilitation programme, which will guide the rehabilitation of the site once the Honeymoon project is completed, executive vice president for Australian and Asia Greg Cochran said.
“Construction work on infrastructure at the Honeymoon site will be carried out according to our schedule of commencing production later this year.”
Honeymoon will use in situ recovery, which does not produce tailings or waste rock, reducing the environmental footprint of the operation, Uranium One said.
The uranium will be processed into yellowcake on site and transported for export to utility customers through the same road-rail routes used for yellowcake produced at BHP Billiton's Olympic Dam mine and Heathgate Resources' Beverley operation.
The project has an indicated resource base of 6,5-million pounds of uranium, contained within 1,2-million tons, at an average grade of 0,24%.
