JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – Wage negotiations between iron-ore producer Kumba Iron Ore and the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) would start on Thursday, the union said on Wednesday, noting that its demands had already been submitted to the company.

The union, which was in the majority at all three of Kumba’s operations, stated that while it would keep to its culture of negotiations, it was ready to fight for its demands.

“We are looking forward to positive and mature negotiations to deal with [the] real demands of members and build on the employee share ownership plan gains [our members] have already claimed in Kumba,” NUM chief negotiator at Kumba Lucas Phiri said.

Kumba spokesperson Gert Schoeman told Mining Weekly Online that the company would only comment on this round of negotiations once the process was under way.
