JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – Workers affiliated to the National Union of Mineworkers downed tools in a protected strike at Rand Refinery, in Germiston, on Monday after mediation failed at the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) last week.

Rand Refinery CE Howard Craig said in a statement that the company was working to maintain production levels, and had employed temporary staff to mitigate the impact on the refinery’s operations.

“We currently do not anticipate any major disruptions in our production processes and foresee that business will continue as usual,” he commented

Rand Refinery recently started wage negotiations with the branch committees of Uasa and NUM and, while an agreement was concluded with Uasa members, NUM had declared a dispute to the CCMA.
