JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) − The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) is demanding a R1 000 across-the-board wage increase from platinum miner Northam and higher living out allowances, the union said on Tuesday.
The NUM claims to represent about 7 000 of the company’s 8 000 employees.
“We have no doubt that the employer will deliver on our demands,” said the NUM chief negotiator Zwelitsha Tantsi.
A Northam spokesperson confirmed the NUM wage demands.
Last year, the platinum miner and NUM settled on a 10% to 13% pay rise offer, depending on the category, after a crippling six-week strike at the Zondereinde mine.
Northam also agreed to increase the living out allowance to R1 800. This year, NUM is demanding an increase in living out allowances to R3 500 a month.
