PERTH (miningweekly.com) – The Western Australian Department of Mines and Petroleum has approved ASX-listed nickel developer Sirius Resources’ project management plan for its Nova project.

Construction at Nova remained on track to start in January next year, subject to financing and the receipt of final approvals and permits.

The A$473-million Nova nickel mine was expected to deliver about 26 000 t/y of nickel, 11 500 t/y of copper and 850 t/y of cobalt over a ten-year mine life.

Sirius MD Mark Bennett said that the project financing was on track to be completed by the end of the year, adding that the company had also progressed to detailed negotiations with a number of parties for an initial nickel offtake agreement for half of the planned nickel concentrate production for the three years, as well as copper offtake agreements for all of the copper concentrate produced at the mine.

“The Nova nickel project continues to progress well in line with timelines previously announced and the calibre of the project is such that Sirius is attracting excellent companies with which to partner,” said Bennett.

He added that Sirius also expected to conclude at least one offtake agreement in the near future.

Meanwhile, Sirius has also selected a number of companies as preferred tenderers for various major work programmes at Nova, and has secured a 500-person village.

All of the preferred tenderers would progress to completion of documentation, with agreements likely to be signed before January.
