Newly launched locker promises a fresh approach

Entrepreneur Malcolm Katz has launched a new South Africa-developed and -manufactured locker, which promises a fresh approach to design and functionality in the lock-up environment.

Launched under the Liberty Lockers brand at a trade show in Johannesburg in July, Katz says his design is a first for South Africa, and perhaps in the world.

The locker system is completely round and, therefore, freestanding. The system can also be set up in a semi-circular configuration. Made from a UV-resistant plastic, the lockers are said to be more durable and silent than traditional metal lockers.

The circular design and a coin-operated lock allows for a standalone business that does not require constant attention.

Each locker will be fitted with a recharge facility to allow for the charging of cell phones and tablets. Depending on the power source, it will be USB and/or an electrical socket.

Katz believes his product is well suited to the African mining industry, given that the high-quality ultraviolent-resistant plastic is designed to withstand the harsh African sun, delivering a standalone solution that can be used inside or outside.

“Branding of the lockers plays a big part of my business model, even in the mining industry. Provided the lockers are placed in a high-visibility area, branding becomes valuable,” he tells Mining Weekly.

Katz says Liberty Lockers’ competitive edge stems from having a unique product, packaged in an aesthetically pleasing design.

The lockers are manufactured in Cape Town and required a unique mould, which was produced in Johannesburg. The first locker was manufactured in July.

A provisional patent application has been filed.

Katz says, when launched, the locker was well received with over 150 enquiries from interested parties ranging from events companies to advertising agencies, shopping centres and industrial site applications.
