A new 990K wheel loader, which offers more power and increased payload for greater productivity and fuel efficiency, was launched in May by mining and construction equipment manufacturer Caterpillar (Cat).

The wheel loader features a redesigned cab that delivers an improved operator interface and a quiet environment, as well as several new features promoting the safety and performance of the operator and maintenance technician.

Designed as an ideal loading tool for Cat construction and mining trucks, specifically the 773, 775 and 777, which range in capacity from 60 t to 100 t, the 990K also features engine configurations to meet customer needs worldwide. Replacing the 990H model, the 990K wheel loader builds on the proven features of previous models, says Cat.

The rated payload of the new 990K model is 17.5 t, which increased from the 16.5 t payload of the H series model. The increased payload makes the new loader a perfect four-pass match with the Cat 775 truck, for efficient, high-production loading, notes the company. This means that the loader will only need to transfer four loads of material to fill the 775 truck.

Additional performance series buckets promote fast filling and full bucket loads on every pass and are available in sizes ranging from 8.6 m3 to 10 m3.

The Cat C27 ACERT engine powers the 990K wheel loader, and delivers an 11% increase in power, compared with the previous model. Net power of 521 kW helps deliver increased production – without any change in fuel consumption.

The new model’s lower engine speed also helps drive economical fuel use. Additional fuel savings accrue with the 990K ECO Mode, which features on-demand throttle, an engine-idle shutdown system, and an engine-idle kickdown/auto-resume system, says Cat.

The 990K is available as a US Environmental Protection Agency Tier 4 final version and as a Tier 2 version for less regulated regions. Further, neither regeneration nor operator intervention is required for the nitrogen oxide reduction system and diesel oxidation catalyst equipping the Tier 4 Final model.

There is also no increase in fuel consumption as a result of the engine emissions control system.

Meanwhile, Cat’s exclusive, field-proven impeller clutch torque converter uses a lock- up clutch, providing direct drive to boost fuel economy, trim cycle times and reduce heat, especially in load-and-carry applications. The system enables operators to balance rimpull and hydraulic power for optimum loading efficiency.

Further, the unit’s positive flow control hydraulic system uses a variable displacement, electronically controlled pump to precisely apportion oil flow based on operator control inputs.

Improved Cab, Advanced Operator Interface
The redesigned cab allows for easy access and features noise suppression that delivers a benchmark sound level of 69.9 dB(A) for superior operator comfort, says Cat.

The Cat Comfort III seat provides integrated seat-mounted controls for smooth and comfortable operation. Transmission controls, integral to the steering and transmission integrated control steering lever, enable convenient travel control.

Meanwhile, the wheel loader’s operator station features the Cat Vital Information Management System 3G, which provides customisable operator profiles, a cycle timer and an integral payload control system, which provides on-the-go payload weighing. The graphic information display is also easy to use and keeps key information in front of the operator.

The 990K is also equipped with the Cat Vision rear-view camera system and in-cab display to show the operator the area behind the loader. The Cat Detect object detection system, optionally available, builds on the camera system with radars and in-cab software that notify the operator when an object is detected within the radar coverage area.

The systems are designed to enhance operator awareness, especially in congested loading areas.

Enhanced Serviceability and Versatility
For added safety, a remote panel houses a stairway light switch, an engine shutdown switch and lockouts for the transmission and engine starter. A second panel, which features a jump-start receptacle, provides convenient access to the battery disconnect switch. Routine maintenance points, including hydraulic pressure taps and oil sampling ports, are also easily accessible.

Meanwhile, Cat’s optional ground-level service centre reduces service time on the wheel loader. It displays fluid-level status, houses drain-and-fill ports and provides a data port for diagnostic work.

Further, several additional options are available to tailor the wheel loader for specific applications and sites. For example, the optional high lift linkage enables the 990K to load Cat 777 trucks. The integrated axle-cooling package and ride control options are particularly beneficial in load-and-carry work, notes the company.

Application-specific arrangements are available for steel mill and forestry applications, while increased stability and larger lift and tilt cylinders provide the extra capacity required for tough applications.

Additional guarding and protection keep the machine running in the harsh steel mill environment and a three-valve hydraulic system is included in the mill yard arrangement for smooth top-clamp control when handling logs, adds Cat.
