Global mineral exploration company Boart Longyear is using the quadrennial MINExpo International exhibition and conference to showcase several new and tried-and-tested drill rigs.

Visitors to this year’s event, being held from September 26 to 28 at the Las Vegas Convention Centre in Nevada, in the US, will be introduced to the LF160 drill rig and Freedom Loader set, the compact LS250 MiniSonic drill rig, StopeMaster drill rig and the LM110 underground coring rig with a Driller Control Interface.

US-headquartered Boart Longyear will be located in North Hall, with drilling experts on hand to speak to customers about how the company can help improve their drilling operations.

“We are excited to launch Boart Longyear’s new surface coring rig, the LF160 drill rig, and Freedom Loader. We invite everyone to come and see this drill rig and loader for the very first time at our booth,” says Boart Longyear marketing and product management director Monika Portman.

She states that the company uses combined proven technology from its most popular surface coring drill rigs to create the powerful LF160 drill rig. When paired with the Freedom Loader, an ideal solution is created for contractors aiming to be awarded sophisticated surface-drilling exploration contracts that stipulate some of the highest safety standards, without compromising on productivity.

The combination of the LF160 drill rig and Freedom Loader is one of the industry’s first 100% hands-free rod-handling solutions, enthuses Boart Longyear. No intervention from the driller’s assistant is required to align and cycle the rods or connect the hoist plugs when operating the loader, which takes place behind a control panel.

Further, the Freedom Loader can cycle 6 m rods in the same amount of time as a manual cycle, therefore, enhancing safety without compromising on productivity. With an NQ capacity of up to 1 800 m, the LF160 drill rig is efficient and economical when undertaking shallow-hole drilling and can handle the majority of diamond coring needs.

Also on display at this year’s MINExpo is Boart Longyear’s growing line of TruCore and TruShot instrumentation. Portman says TruCore, a new line of electronic instrumentation focused on providing end-users with safe, easy-to-use tools that deliver accurate subsurface information to mining clients, will soon launch in Latin America and North America.

Portman asserts that the TruCore electronic core orientation system is the easiest to use on the market, and is built from the highest-quality steel. “With this product, customers will improve drill [operator] health and safety through reduced manual handling time and enjoy a better ergonomic position when reading core orientations.”

TruCore provides the accurate data and results that mining clients rely on, she adds. Core orientation is easier with TruCore, as there is no need to disassemble the tool to obtain an orientation mark. The product also increases drill string reliability and allows for confident drilling through the use of high-quality steel extension barrels, which are supplied with every tool rental.

Meanwhile, Boart Longyear global engineering VP Shayne Drivdahl will present a MINExpo education session on how sonic drilling can increase rate of return on September 27 from 08:00 to 10:00 in room N257 on the upper concourse. The benefits of sonic drilling for mine sites, which Boart Longyear says are becoming well known to the mining industry, will also be discussed.

The company notes that these benefits cannot always be provided by traditional surface coring drill rigs and the session, thus, aims to share various applications that should be considered by mining clients.

Boart Longyear is also hosting the Ontario government at its booth on September 27 from 09:45 for an announcement from the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation.

The company considers MINExpo an “excellent opportunity” to not only showcase its new technology and products but also engage with existing and potential customers on how it can help them meet their productivity and safety goals.

“MINExpo is the largest and most highly anticipated product show in our industry. As the world’s leading supplier of drilling services and products, we think it is vital that Boart Longyear is a part of the show. We look forward to spending time with new and existing customers and all people in the industry,” concludes Portman.
