JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – Aim-listed manganese and iron-ore developer Ferrex on Wednesday reported that its Nayega manganese project’s resource had increased to 14-million tons at 12.4% manganese.

The company said this was a significant milestone for the mine, in northern Togo, which the company was developing into a 250 000 t/y mining operation.

“These newly defined Joint Ore Reserves Committee-compliant resources have the potential to significantly enhance the already robust economics of our Nayega mining operation,” Ferrex MD Dave Reeves said.

He added that the company had defined two target areas, less than 7 km from the main Nayega deposit, which were within easy trucking distance from the proposed processing plant.

“We will now complete additional pitting and metallurgical testing to determine beneficiation characteristics of the ore and, in turn, increase confidence in the resources.

“In conjunction with the recently concluded Mining Convention negotiations with the Togo government and pending completion of modelling and documentation for the accelerated start-up option for the manganese operation, this is just one of a number of positive developments for the company,” Reeves commented.
