Remote camp solutions provider Dynamic African Projects expects to complete construction of a multi- million-rand construction camp for a gas and petrochemicals company in Mozambique’s Inhambane province by the end of June.

“The camp, when completed, will accommodate about 500 people,” says company director Wesley Nel, adding that the camp is located near the City of Vilanculos.

As the temporary camp mostly comprises existing facilities, the company will supply prefabricated accommodation for senior management, says Nel, adding that the site will be upgraded to an 800-man camp next year. Dynamic African started construction of the camp in April.

The petrochemicals company that awarded the contract has a central processing facility in Mozambique, where gas is cleaned, dried and extracted from the nearby Pande and Temane gasfields before it is transported through an 865 km pipeline to the company’s facilities in Secunda.

Market Flux
Meanwhile, Nel notes that, owing to the 2008 global financial crisis and subsequent challenges, remote camp solutions contracts in Mozambique’s mining sector have decreased. In addition, owing to several delays in mining projects, the company had not, until recently, completed some contracts previously awarded.

However, Nel expects the number of awarded contracts to increase as a result of mining projects that are on track again, as well as new mining projects that are going to be implemented, the expanding oil and gas sectors, and exploration studies. Nel adds that the company also plans to open offices in the Cabo Delgado province to provide its services to the emerging market.

US-based independent oil and gas exploration and production company Anadarko Petroleum, operating in Cabo Delgado’s Rovuma basin, is one of the companies currently undertaking a liquefied natural gas (LNG) development project in Mozambique, having discovered between 45- trillion and 70-trillion cubic feet (tcf) of recoverable natural gas.

In addition, Italy’s largest oil company, Eni, announced a 212.5-billion-cubic-metre gasfield discovery near Mamba South gasfield in 2012, and another new discovery in 2013, which confirmed the potential of its Area 4 in the Mamba complex offshore of Mozambique to be 75 tcf.

Other Projects
Dynamic African has been involved in several other temporary camp projects for major mining companies in recent years, including projects for Brazilian mining major Vale, for its Moatize coal project, in Tete province, and projects for Australia-based mining major Rio Tinto’s Benga coal mine.

The company has completed various projects for the Moatize coal project since 2008, including general construction works, such as fire detection, fire prevention and prefabricated buildings.

Dynamic African also designed, supplied and installed a workshop, a prefabricated administration building, a change room, a control room process plant, and a steel structure warehouse, in addition to managing all civil construction, concrete works, water, and sewer reticulation at Rio Tinto’s Benga coal mine, in Tete province.
