JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) − Acting Chief Inspector of Mines David Msiza’s appointment has been made permanent, Cabinet announced on Friday.

Msiza took over from Thabo Gazi late last year.

This year, the Mines Inspectorate issued 441 safety stoppages in line with its Section 54 health and safety directive. Mineral Resources spokesperson Bheki Khumalo said it was the highest number of safety stoppages ever recorded during the six-month period.

The country also experienced 73 fatalities on its mines, with the latest incident resulting in the death of two miners at Gold Fields’ KDC East, formerly Kloof, mine on Thursday.
