JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – JSE-listed platinum miner Lonmin has appointed Ben Moolman as COO with immediate effect.

He had been acting COO since February, when former COO Johan Viljoen resigned.

Moolman, who had, in the past, served in a variety of operational management positions at Lonmin, rejoined the group in August 2014 to head up the business support office. Prior to that, he was head of Glencore’s platinum division.

A mining engineer by profession, Moolman held a BSc in Engineering (Mining) from the University of the Witwatersrand and had more than 30 years’ experience in the platinum mining industry.

“This is an outstanding appointment for Lonmin. Ben is well known and highly respected across mining in South Africa and he has made an exceptional contribution to the business since he rejoined us last year.

“I look forward to continuing to work closely with him as we execute our strategic plans to create value for all our stakeholders,” commented Lonmin CEO Ben Magara

Moolman would continue to oversee the business support office functions until a new head was appointed.
