MMD has remained at the forefront of in-pit sizing and conveying technology for decades, developing sizing systems that optimise efficiency, improve safety and yield high productivity. Now, at the forefront of this technology is its latest machine – the MMD Atlas 500t Transporter.

“The Atlas 500t Transporter boasts impressive features and credentials. It has the ability to move a semi-mobile sizing station – secondary sizing module, sacrificial conveyor, primary sizing module, feeder and hopper module – over many kilometres,” MMD Mineral Sizing Africa says.

Operation of the transporter is handled wire-lessly for maximum control and safety when travelling, lifting or slewing. The transporter uses specifically designed support frames enabling the load to be lifted and rotated at any height for optimal travel. The transporter maintains its centre of gravity over different gradients and terrain with each payload being supported by four diesel-powered hydraulic cylinders, which are controlled and monitored by over 80 sensors.

“We have been testing the ‘proof of concept’ at a coal mine in Limpopo, where we have relocated a semi-mobile plant with the MMD Atlas 500t Transporter from outside the pit to inside the pit, roughly a 6 km distance,” says MMD Mineral Sizing Africa technical director Janis Lombard. He goes on to say that, “the system has proved invaluable to the client, showing huge cost savings on haulage costs by reducing the distance of haulage”.

Lombard adds that the mine is planning on moving the plant roughly 700 m every three years, continually moving the plant closer for easier, cost-effective haulage.

MMD Mineral Sizing Africa’s presence at Electra Mining Africa this year will emphasise its commitment to the mining industry on the African continent, by showcasing not only the Transporter’s capabilities, but also the rest of the range of products that MMD have supplied to about 300 installations across Africa.

MMD produces a range of equipment based on the patented Twin Shaft Mineral Sizers. Designed to meet the needs of the underground coal mining industry, MMD Twin Shaft Mineral Sizers have advanced from 500 mm centre machines to 1 500 mm centre machines, capable of over 10 000 t/h. These machines include primary, secondary and tertiary sizers for wet and dry processing.

Complementing the robust Twin Shaft Mineral Sizer, MMD has designed and developed a range of heavy duty apron plate feeders, which convey unbroken material to the crushing plant. These heavy duty feeders are available in widths of 1 500 mm, 2 000 mm, 3 000 mm and 4 000 mm and are often arranged beneath tipping points and transport raw material to the crushing plant.
