Mining solutions company CAE Mining will start regional releases of its CAE Summit Web- and cloud-based strategic openpit mine planning software solution later this year, says CAE Mining technical director Andy Lapworth.

CAE Summit assists mining companies in determining the best mining strategy by rapidly generating hundreds of alternative openpit scenarios. Scenarios are based on multiple input variables, such as mining costs, commodity prices, processing recovery and exchange rates. The system also caters for the impact of practical constraints such as varying slope angles, sinking rates and fleet capacities.

Lapworth notes that the software solution generates scenarios in a few days, compared with the several weeks or even months it takes to generate similar scenarios manually. From these scenarios, the software generates the physical shape of the openpit mine, enabling companies to proceed to the implementation phase using the output models.

CAE Mining began developing CAE Summit in 2011 and is currently conducting consulting services using the software.

The company is also developing a similar software solution for underground stope mine design, which will similarly generate hundreds of stope mining designs to determine the most economical design, Lapworth notes.

Further, CAE Mining is developing a geological risk module for rapid generation and analysis of conditionally simulated block models.

“CAE Mining acquired geology and mine planning provider Datamine in 2010 and geological data management supplier Century Systems Technologies in 2011, and through these companies has a traditional strength in resource evaluation and strategic planning. CAE Mining has leveraged the trusted methodologies from its traditional software applications and packaged them using cloud-based technologies to achieve order of magnitude speed improvements and unparalleled accessibility and ease of use,” says Lapworth.

Simulation Training Solution

CAE Mining delivered an integrated training solution, including two CAE Terra simulators and elearning courseware to silver-producing major Fresnillo in July.

Fresnillo is one of a number of leading companies that have adopted CAE’s proven aviation and military training technologies to improve mine productivity and safety.

The CAE Mining training solution includes the industry’s highest-fidelity simulation from the only certified Type 7 simulator manufacturer servicing the mining industry. This technology is complemented by a training system that includes integrated elearning content deployable on a personal computer, a Mac or an iPad, which can be linked with a learning management system to track the students’ progress.

Fully simulated rock dynamics and climatic conditions allow students to train with the realistic feel of equipment interacting with rock, preparing them for a range of conditions and unpredictable events.

CAE Terra mining simulators offer a realistic training environment featuring a 270º wrap-around screen, high-fidelity simulation, and cabins for underground load-haul-dump and drilling equipment.

The simulators make use of CAE’s simulation technologies and offer high-fidelity visuals and a six-degrees-of-freedom motion system based on aviation standards. Further, CAE Mining provides instructors with the ability to dynamically alter the training scenario leading to improved operator performance.

CAE Mining was able to enhance and tailor this training solution to Fresnillo’s needs through knowledge gained from supporting the mining company in geology and mine planning optimisation projects. “We have been accompanied by CAE Mining in the whole process of designing, developing, building, installing and testing these simulators. Fresnillo is pleased with this project and feels confident in the growing commercial relationship between CAE Mining and Fresnillo. Fresnillo has a vision for applying world-class training to improve safety and productivity and the CAE Terra training system delivers just that. It is a key feature of our new Zacatecas training facility,” says Fresnillo CEO Octavio Alvidrez.

CAE Mining president Damian McKay says, “CAE Mining and Fresnillo worked together on a shared vision for improving safety and productivity. The solution CAE Mining has delivered to Fresnillo goes beyond the previous industry standard of familiarisation of opera- tors with cabin layout and basic operation. Mining equipment operators deserve the best technology and training methodologies to ensure their safety. CAE Mining is excited to introduce these methodologies into the mining industry. The turnkey system is based on best practice learning systems developed by CAE for pilot training, including inte- grated electronic learning content, lesson planning tools and brief/debrief functionality to increase learning effectiveness.”
