Location: The mine is located on the western limb of the Bushveld Complex, near the town of Kroondal, in South Africa.

Brief history: The Marikana platinum-mine started miningoperations in 2002.

Brief description: Marikana Platinum Mine has a small Aquarius Platinum (SA) management team, with mining being outsourced to Moolman Brothers and MCC Opencast andconcentrator operations to Minopex. The mine has an offtake agreement with Impala Refining Services and employs 920contractors.

Products: Platinum-group metals.

Mining method: An openpit and a concentrator plant. Theopenpit has a depth of some 100 m. Underground mining will follow at a later stage.

Reserves: Total proven and probable reserves are 14,39 Mtas at June 30, 2004.

Resources: Total measured and indicated resources are23,69 Mt as at June 30, 2004.

Geology: The orebody, approximately 1,5 km by 3 km, is a basin-like structure that dips down towards the centre from all sides at an angle to a maximum depth of about 200 m. Thesurface topography is flat with a gentle slope to the north. The deposit is faulted with two large dykes running through it.

Major infrastructure and equipment: From the openpit, the broken ore is conveyed to the conventional mill/float plant with three stages of crushing. The plant has a large gyratorycrusher in front of an additional two crushers to cope with the feed from the openpit. Stripping fleets use small machines inthe clay areas and larger machines in other areas, with RH90 free digging within the boulder zone, RH 200s below that and Cat 330s further down. The fleet increased in July 2004 with asecond RH 200 and eight 789 haul units.

Future prospects: The mine plans to go deeper faster, and this has led to Marikana breaking its record for ore in March 2005 when it produced 147 000 t/m, against its previous production record of 146 000 t/m.

Controlling company: 75% held by Aquarius Platinum.

Contact: Rob Mallison, generalmanager.

Unique features: The deposit is faulted, with virtually 80% of it being hard rock.
