Lynas facing one more court hurdle
PERTH (miningweekly.com) - Rare earths miner Lynas said this week that there was only one judicial review challenge remaining against its advanced materials plant (LAMP).
The miner said that it would strongly defend the remaining judicial review, which had originally been scheduled to be heard on February 5, but had been postponed to enable the Kuantan High Court to deal with some preliminary matters.
No new date had been set.
During December last year, the Malaysian Court of Appeal dismissed a court challenge by environmental group Save Malaysia Stop Lynas, against the grant of a temporary operating licence (TOL) for the Lamp, with the environmental group subsequently turning to the Kuantan High Court.
The Kuantan High Court this week denied a second application from the Save Malaysia Stop Lynas group for leave to seek a judicial review on the award of a TOL for the LAMP.
Meanwhile, Lynas this week reported that the Phase 2 expansion of the LAMP production capacity, which would take it to 22 000 t/y of rareearth oxides, was 90% complete at the end of the three months to December.
The company expected initial commercial rare-earth product samples to be available in February, with the ramp-up to nominal Phase 1 capacity to take place over the coming months.
