JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – Platinum miner Lonmin will cease production at Marikana for one day on Wednesday, after a worker died at the mine.

The accident on Monday night was Lonmin’s fourth fatality for the financial year and its third in the 2011 calendar year.

“This performance is unacceptable and with the support of organised labour, Lonmin management has taken the decision to cease production at its Marikana operations tomorrow for a day, so that each and every employee can re-affirm their commitment to our core value of zero harm,” the company said in a statement.

Lonmin is the world’s third-largest platinum group metals producer.
