Lithium-rich WA bids to host battery research centre
PERTH (miningweekly.com) – The Western Australian government on Tuesday confirmed that the application for the Future Battery Industries Cooperative Research Centre (FBI CRC) was one of six to be shortlisted to the next round by the Cooperative Research Centres (CRC) programme.
The state government has included a provisional A$5.5-million in its Budget for the Minerals Research Institute of Western Australia (MRIWA), which his bidding to establish a new energy industry CRC in Western Australia.
Stage 2 of the submission process involves providing a comprehensive business case for consideration by the CRC advisory committee.
"It's great to see that the bid for the FBI CRC has passed the first assessment,” said Western Australian Mines and Petroleum Minister Bill Johnston.
"The commonwealth government has recently acknowledged the growing importance of the battery and energy materials sector to the Australian economy. This CRC bid has never been more relevant.”
The Association of Mining and Exploration Companies (Amec) pointed out that Western Australia currently mines more than 60% of the world’s supply of lithium and has all of the other minerals needed to make lithium-ion batteries.
“This makes Western Australia the natural choice to locate the Future Battery Industries Cooperative Research Centre,” said Amec CEO Warren Pearce.
“Although, it is proposed to base the CRC in Perth, the work will support development of this industry across Australia, ensuring all states and territories have the opportunity to participate in this exciting new industry.”
“This is a wonderful opportunity for the fast growing Australian battery minerals industry, and one that will have flow-on effects for the entire Australian economy, providing new jobs and significant economic benefits,” said Pearce.
