JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) - South African iron-ore producer, Kumba Iron Ore (KIO) on Wednesday reported a fatality at its Kolomela mine in the Northern Cape.

The accident occurred on the Witsand access road to the mine, previously known as the Sishen South project, near Postmasburg on Tuesday.

An employee was fatally injured when the tyre of a tipper truck caught alight and exploded while he and two others were trying to extinguish the fire. The two other employees were not injured.

An investigation has been launched into the circumstances and cause of the accident, KIO said in a statement.
