PERTH (miningweekly.com) – South Africa-focused coal miner Universal Coal has reported a 23.65-million increase in the ore reserve at its Kangala operation.

The Kangala operation is estimated to host an ore reserve of 35.94-million tonnes, with the hike resulting from the completion of a prefeasibility study on the Middelbult property, which Universal is hoping to incorporate into the greater Kangala operation.

“The conversion of the Middelbult mineral resource to ore reserve ensures that Kangala has sufficient reserve tonnage to meet our long-term offtake commitments and provides production optimisation and expansion optionality at the mine,” Universal CEO Tony Weber said on Thursday.

The Kangala operation produced 2.4-million tonnes of coal during the financial year ended June, with the project estimated to host a mineral resource of 108.53-million tonnes.
