With the economy and Mining Charter front of mind, the 2018 Joburg Indaba – taking place from October 3 to 4 at the Inanda Club, in Johannesburg – will scrutinise the mining industry and the economy, says event organiser Resources 4 Africa.

Key speakers will focus on diverse topics, with the keynote address to be delivered by Minerals Council South Africa (MCSA) chief executive Roger Baxter on October 3 on whether South Africa is experiencing a “harsh” environment or President Cyril Ramaphosa’s promised “new dawn”.

Economic consultancy Economists dotcoza owner Mike Schussler, meanwhile, will provide a high-level overview of the global economic climate and its impact on South African mining, followed by a comparison of the performance of South African mining and that of the global industry by advisory firm PwC Southern Africa CEO Dion Shango.

MCSA president and diversified major Exxaro CEO Mxolisi Mgojo will assess what has been achieved by the local mining industry in the last ten years and a panel of industry heavyweights, including investment firm Talent10 nonexecutive chairperson Sipho Nkosi, zinc miner Vedanta Zinc International CEO Deshnee Naidoo and mining investment trust BlackRock World Mining Trust nonexecutive chairperson Ian Cockerill, will outline their personal reflections on the last decade in South African mining.

Resources 4 Africa adds that, as safety at mine sites across the country is currently a key focus area for the local industry, the Indaba will dissect the progress made towards achieving zero fatalities, with panellists from mining companies Impala Platinum, Zimplats and Kumba Iron Ore to participate.

Other high-level speakers include Chris Griffith, Mike Teke, Mike Fraser, Themba Mkhwanazi, Mark Heywood, Anton Esterhuizen, Terence Goodlace, Alex Mhembere, Nico Muller, Ben Magara and Peter Steenkamp, among others.

“This year, Resources 4 Africa is also pleased to welcome diversified mining company Anglo American former capital fund manager and nonexecutive director Jim Rutherford once more, along with investors and heads of investor relations who will take part in what is sure to be an insightful discussion on the sentiment towards mining investment in South Africa and Africa.”

Discussions on the economic enablers for the industry and the barriers to beneficiation will include energy solutions provider Matleng Energy Solutions chairperson and power utility Eskom Holdings nonexecutive director Nelisiwe Magubane, mining company Bushveld Minerals CEO Fortune Mojapelo, rail transport company Transnet Freight Rail coal GM Mandisa Mondi, consultancy firm XMP Consulting senior coal analyst Xavier Prévost, investment management company Public Investment Corporation sector specialist for mining, beneficiation and energy Heidi Sternberg and diamond miner De Beers Consolidated Mines deputy CEO Nompumelelo Zikalala.

The Joburg Indaba has become known as a mining conference which has raised the bar and established a clear competitive advantage by creating an environment where passionate industry leaders can have honest, open and direct conversations in an intimate atmosphere. These conversations have continued in response to the pressing need to focus on relevant and crucial issues throughout the course of the year.
