Implats appoints political, industry heavyweights to board
JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – JSE-listed Impala Platinum (Implats) has appointed former Cabinet Minister Dr Sydney Mufamadi, former Harmony Gold CEO Bernard Swanepoel and former African Development Bank COO Dr Nkosana Moyo as independent nonexecutive directors, with immediate effect.
Mufamadi is the director of the School of Leadership at the University of Johannesburg and serves on the subsidiary boards of Barclays Bank Africa in Mozambique and Tanzania.
He has built a reputation in various political leadership positions, previously occupying the roles of Safety and Security Minister and Provincial and Local Government Minister in South Africa, during which time he was commended for his mediation and conflict resolution skills, as well as his expertise in bilateral and multilateral diplomacy.
Implats added in a statement that Swanepoel, who previously headed gold companies Village Main Reef and Harmony, would bring to the board “extensive” deep-level mining and commercial experience.
He is currently a partner at To-The-Point Growth Specialists, the nonexecutive chairperson of Village Main Reef and serves as nonexecutive director on the boards of Sanlam and African Rainbow Minerals.
Meanwhile, Moyo, who has a PhD in physics from Imperial College, University of London, is the founder and executive chairperson of the Mandela Institute for Development Studies and, as a Zimbabwean national, has served on the boards of several companies in the cement, sugar, finance, tourism, mining, aviation and food sectors in that country.
He previously served as African Development Bank VP and COO, Actis managing partner and International Finance Corporation senior adviser and associate.
