New Mineral Resources Minister Gwede Mantashe, who many recall playing a major role in the creation of the first widely accepted Mining Charter, has been advised not to be overhasty in creating a replacement charter for Mining Charter III, which he has vowed to replace with a new charter in three months. Huge controversy surrounded Mining Charter III, which will now be destroyed under Mantashe’s watch. Published for public comment in April last year, colossal condemnation followed Mining Charter III’s sudden gazetting. But that is history now, and proper consultation and a steady hand this time round will ensure that the replacement charter is positive for economic growth, hopefully, in time to benefit from the mining industry being on its strongest footing in years.
