JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – Harmony Gold Mining is for the eighth consecutive year one of two platinum sponsors of the yearly Enactus South Africa National Competition, to be held on Thursday and Friday.

The gold miner described international nonprofit organisation Enactus as a “community” of students, academics and business leaders who were committed to enabling young leaders through the transformative power of entrepreneurial action.

The competition, which takes place from March to July across 36 countries, will see 22 South African university teams showcase the impact of their community outreach projects to a judging panel comprising various business leaders and Harmony executives, creating opportunities for learning and exchange among the participants as well as the placement of students and alumni with companies in search of emerging talent.

Harmony added in a statement on Thursday that it would also sponsor the South Africa Agency for Science and Technology programme, which aimed at improving performance in science and mathematics through learner and teacher development in mining communities.

Harmony has contributed close to R14.6-million to the Enactus programme and R11.5-million towards the advancement of science and technology since 2009.
