JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – Great Basin Gold has employed some of the workforce for its new Burnstone mine, in Mpumalanga, from the local community, a spokesperson for the company confirmed on Tuesday.
This followed allegations that recent protests by some members of the Siyathemba township community, near Balfour was, in part, as a result of the mining company not keeping its promise of hiring half of its Burnstone workforce from the local community.
The spokesperson said that it had already employed about 108 people from the local community to work at the mine.
Protestors reportedly want the Burnstone mine's licence suspended until their concerns are addressed.
Newswire Sapa is quoting a community leader as saying that the Dipaleseng group – formed to voice concerns over the mine's employment policies – would hold a march to the mine when it had been given permission by authorities to do so.
Commercial production at Burnstone, which is situated east of Balfour, was only expected to start in June this year.
