Geology data of Botswana district launched for public perusal
Exploration and earth sciences company Geosoft launched its Botswana Geoscience Portal last month, which is a partnership initiative with the Botswana Geoscience Institute and industry sponsors.
Data available on the Botswana Geoscience Portal includes airborne geophysics, ground geophysics and geochemistry. Future updates will provide access to borehole data, remote sensing, seismic surveys and information products, including interpretations and three-dimensional models.
Developed and hosted by Geosoft, the online portal provides free access to multidisciplinary datasets from Ngamiland, a district in the country’s north-west, through Geosoft’s website.
The geoscience portal aims to help Botswana attract new investment in resource exploration, improve transparency and stimulate collaboration between government, industry and the public to advance understanding of the economic and social needs of the north-west district.
Botswana Geoscience Institute CEO Tiyapo (Hudson) Ngwisanyi says making geoscientific data more accessible and transparent is critical to furthering understanding of the north-west district and encouraging new investment in resource exploration within Africa.
Geosoft CEO Tim Dobush says the company is “excited” to be part of such a collaboration that encourages and promotes downstream economic growth in Botswana. “We are continually engaging with government organisations, like the Botswana Geoscience Institute and industry leaders, to innovate and maximise the value of geoscience data for resource discovery and meet the socioeconomic needs of the broader public sector.”
