When Anglo American CEO Cynthia Carroll took Anglo into the Pebble copper project in Alaska, in 2007, she said it provided the company with “a unique low-cost long-life project” that also had gold deposits. But Pebble now comes with such controversy that Anglo chairperson Sir Mark Moody-Stuart says it should not be built if damage to Alaska’s fisheries, wildlife and livelihoods cannot be avoided. Moody-Stuart’s comments followed the arrival of an Alaskan delegation in London to protest against the project, winning the support of UK jewellers Gold-smiths, Beaverbrooks, Mappin & Webb, Watches of Switzerland, Fifi Bijoux and April Doubleday, which said they would not accept its “dirty gold”.
