After the underground commissioning of the only fully mechanised rock bolter available in the South African mining industry, Gold Fields’ South Deep gold mine has ordered eight Sandvik LH514 14 000 kg load haul dumpers (LHDs).

The mine first ordered three LHDs, which have proven to be very successful and has now ordered a further five units. The first of these will be delivered in March and the remaining four will follow throughout the year.

The LH514 is more heavyweight than its predecessor, the Toro 1400, and features better bucket fill capabilities, engine power to own weight ratio as well as an improved turning radius. An on-board electronic control system provides improved troubleshooting and diagnostics.

LHDs typically have more than 800 electrical connections; however, the Sandvik LH514 has 150, which reduces the probability of failure.

The operator cab provides easier access, improved visibility, efficient air conditioning and lower noise levels. Joint electronic and hydraulic systems throughout the line provide ease of maintenance.
