TORONTO (miningweekly.com) – Mine-site activities at base metals producer First Quantum Minerals' Cayeli copper/zinc mine, in north-eastern Turkey, will be limited to the areas of environment and safety, mine dewatering and underground rehabilitation, while a strike by workers is under way.

The company on Tuesday said unionised workers at the mine had started a strike last Friday, after collective bargaining talks between the union and subsidiary company Cayeli Bakir Isletmeleri deadlocked.

First Quantum said it remained open to reaching an agreement with the union, within the parameters of the company's cost constraints and considering the prevailing base metals market.

Cayeli was expected to produce between 24 000 t and 27 000 t of copper this year, as well as 22 000 t to 25 000 t of zinc and about 4 000 oz of gold.
