PERTH (miningweekly.com) – First gas from the Australia Pacific liquefied natural gas (APLNG) project in the Surat basin has reached the Curtis Island LNG facility, in Queensland, operator Origin Energy reported on Wednesday.

The arrival of the first gas to the LNG facility marked the completion of commissioning of the 530 km high-pressure gas pipeline, which was another important milestone for the project, Origin stated.

With the completion of the pipeline and the arrival of first gas, the APLNG project could start commissioning of the power generation facilities on the island. The commissioning of the LNG facility on Curtis Island would also include the verification and testing of each system of the first processing train and the two LNG tanks, part of which had already started.

The $24.7-billion APLNG project would consist of two processing trains each with a 4.5-million-tonne-a-year nameplate production capacity. LNG from the first train was expected by mid-2015.

The project is being developed by Origin and its joint venture partners ConocoPhillips and Sinopec.
