JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – TSX-listed mining company Katanga Mining on Wednesday said it had temporarily halted copper and cobalt production at the Luili metallurgical facility, in the Democratic Republic of Congo, following a transformer fire.
The company said in a statement to shareholders that production would be stopped for two to four weeks while a replacement transformer was fitted.
"Revenues are unlikely to be impacted in the short term due to the immediate availability of finished metal inventories. We expect production to resume shortly after a replacement transformer is fitted," said CEO Steven Isaacs.
The company added that no one was injured in the fire and that mining operations at the Kamoto underground mine, as well as the Kamoto and Kolwezi concentrators were unaffected.
Stocks will be accumulated at Luili to be processed at a later stage.
