Extra comment period for KGHM’s changed Ajax mine expected in Nov
TORONTO (miningweekly.com) – Kamloops community members will have another chance to give input into the proposed Ajax copper/gold mine, in British Columbia, after proponent KGHM International in May substantially changed the mine layout in response to community complaints.
The province’s Environmental Assessment Office (EAO) and the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency on Tuesday announced that they would be jointly holding a 30-day public comment period, and public information sessions, regarding revised information requirements for the proposed Ajax mine.
The provincial and federal agencies were busy conducting a review of the proposed mine design changes announced by KGHM Ajax Mining, along with any necessary related changes to the application information requirements and environmental-impact statement (EIS) guidelines.
This review would also take into account any advice from technical reviewers, including First Nations, on the Advisory Working Group. The review was expected to be completed in the coming weeks, at which time the public would be invited to provide input on specific changes to the application information requirements/EIS guidelines.
This was the document that would provide a frame of reference and help determine the information to be collected by KGHM for an application to the EAO and the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency.
The public comment period was expected to start late in November.
Once the application had been submitted and accepted for review, the EAO would hold a 75-day public comment period on the application.
KGHM aimed to submit its environmental assessment application to the federal and provincial government review agencies by early 2015.
KGHM is the operator of the Ajax project, a proposed openpit mine expected to yield roughly 109-million pounds of copper and 99 000 oz of gold a year for about 20 years. The mine is located at the historic Ajax-Afton site south-west of Kamloops. The site has seen a range of exploration and extraction activity under Teck Resources and Afton Operating Corp between 1989 and 1997.
