Electra Mining Africa has established itself is the second largest mining show in the world and is one of the most significant events on the calendar for organiser Specialised Exhibitions Montgomery.

A member of the global Montgomery Group, Specialised Exhibitions Montgomery has been involved in arranging the mining exhibition since the early 1990s.

Specialised Exhibitions Montgomery chairperson John Kaplan states that the Electra Mining Africa show has a history dating back 42 years when it covered about 15 000m2 and featured around 150 exhibitors.

The show is held every two years and Kaplan promises that this year’s offering will be bigger and better than ever.

“The event has grown extensively since then and this year we expect to host the biggest show ever, with more than 800 exhibitors having booked their positions across 36 000m2 of floor space at the Expo Centre in Johannesburg,” says Kaplan. “We also expect visitor numbers to increase significantly in 2012.”

Gary Corin, MD of Specialised Exhibitions Montgomery, says that Electra Mining Africa that attracts a high-level of local and international interest and produces off-the-floor sales, valuable sales leads and excellent business connections for its exhibitors. This is the reason for space being sold out well in advance of the show.”

Corin says that Electra Mining Africa, together with the co-located shows Elenex Africa 2012, Machine Tools Africa 2012, and Transport Expo 2012, will provide visitors with the “ultimate platform to view a vast array of new innovations, products, services, technologies, trends and industry developments in the mining, industrial, construction, power generation and machine tools industries.”

“It brings coinciding industry sectors together at one location for visitor and exhibitor convenience and is the recognised gateway into Africa for local and global investors looking for new business opportunities,” says Corin.

Visitors can expect to see many leading-edge South African companies in the packed halls and outside precincts, as well as high-profile international exhibitors from countries such as Canada, USA, the UK, France, Germany, Austria, Italy, Switzerland, Sweden, Russia, Turkey, India, China and Botswana,” says Corin.

He explains that the exhibitor mix has changed over the years to suit market-driven needs and some companies have reduced exhibitor floor space compared to previous years. But this has led to greater creativity in the utilisation of space and also the addition of many new exhibitors eager to be at Electra Mining Africa for the first time.”

Another feature of Electra Mining Africa are the inward buying missions from various countries, organised in collaboration with the Department of Trade and Industry and the Capital Equipment Export Council.

“Electra Mining Africa differentiates itself as an exhibition by being experiential; it gives the visitor the opportunity to see how a piece of equipment really works through live demonstrations. Visitors also get to learn about the very latest technology and product developments. This is what visitors love about the show and keeps them coming back for more each time,” says Kaplan.

He adds that the event promotes South Africa as a both a tourist and business destination, with it reinforcing South Africa as a dominant force in the global mining sector with world-class technology.

The Electra Mining event has accreditation from UFI, which is the Global Association of the exhibition industry. This means that the event is audited according to strict standards.

Specialised Exhibitions Montgomery offers South Africa’s largest portfolio of exhibitions servicing business-to-business sectors of the Southern African economy.

In addition to Electra Mining Africa, other business-oriented shows in its portfolio include InterbuildAfrica, Markex and Hostex, while on the consumer front it organises Grand Designs Live South Africa.

“Even though we have been organising Electra Mining for more than 40 years, we never lose sight of the fact that each edition needs to be fresh and keep pace with innovations on the exhibition front. We take the best of previous shows and combine it with new thinking to ensure visitors get the most exciting and relevant exhibition possible,” says Kaplan.

Electra Mining Africa 2012 takes place at the Expo Centre in Johannesburg from 10 to 14 September.
