The inaugural PowerEx trade show, held last month alongside the biennial Electra Mining Africa at the Johannesburg Expo Centre, in Nasrec, has been declared a success by the show’s organiser, Specialised Exhibitions Montgomery.

“We received a good response from the mining and industrial industry. There was a lot of interest in our vision for PowerEx, with many companies booking exhibition space for 2016 and others engaging with us on the development of the next show,” Specialised Exhibitions Montgomery mining and industrial portfolio director Charlene Hefer tells Mining Weekly.

Launched in 2015, PowerEx was developed as a premier showcase for the electric power and energy sectors, with the inaugural event attracting over 20 exhibitors who took up over one-third of the space in Hall 9. Specialised Exhibitions Montgomery will set aside Hall 9 of the Expo Centre to host PowerEx alongside the Electra Mining Africa trade show from September 10 to 14, 2018.

Hefer points out that there is excellent opportunity for growth going into the 2018 show.

“Not all floor space in Hall 9 was dedicated to PowerEx. Because it was a new show, we anticipated that, in the first year, the hall would still have some space available for general mining and industrial exhibitors.”

She states that there is beneficial synergy between PowerEx and Electra Mining Africa, as energy-intensive mining operations are under continued pressure to reduce their dependence on traditional energy resources and decrease the significant draw on the local electricity grid infrastructure.

“Access to reliable and cost-effective forms of energy is a strategic priority for the global mining sector and the industry is increasingly looking at alternative power sources such as solar, wind and other renewable-energy, technologies. PowerEx is the ideal platform from which to offer solutions to address this need,” Hefer explains.

PowerEx extends to manufacturers and suppliers involved in biofuels; boilers, heat exchangers and combustion systems; cable and wire; diesel and gas engines, equipment and services; energy technology; generators and all associated accessories; hydropower; lighting; metering and related components; renewable energy equipment and services; sensors; solar power; switchgear and other related equipment; transformers; and wind and gas turbines. The same industries and product companies will be approached for the upcoming show in 2018.

From Electra Mining 2004 until the event in 2014, the focus of Hall 9 was on the machine tools market. Every four years, Machine Tools Africa co-located with Electra Mining and, on alternate years, Hall 9 was dedicated to a machine tools showcase. Machine Tools Africa has expanded significantly and has outgrown the space available in Hall 9. As no further space was available at Electra Mining Africa, Machine Tools Africa has become a standalone show and is next scheduled to take place in May 2017.

Meanwhile, African international electrical engineering and lighting and power-generation exhibition Elenex Africa has also successfully co-located with Electra Mining since 1992 and featured predominantly in Hall 7. This event’s focus was on electronics, electrical engineering, electromechanical components, instrumentation and control systems, lighting design and application, switchgear and drives, and testing and measuring equipment. This will be the same profile at the 2018 show.
