Explosionproof light-emitting diode (LED) lighting has enjoyed strong growth in recent years, owing to the technology’s many advantages over conventional light sources, including its ability to withstand extreme temperatures.

Globally, explosionproof LED lighting has a critical role to play in the oil and gas industry, but it also has sizeable market share in other sectors, such as the mining industry.

German explosion protection electrical equipment manufacturer R Stahl reports that the LED tube light from its 6036 series is designed to tolerate temperatures as low as –55 °C, making it suitable for applications such as liquefied petroleum gas exploration in the Arctic region. On the other hand, the light can withstand heat of up to 60 °C and tolerates extreme temperature fluctuations.

While the IK10-tested design is rugged, the waterproof and dustproof IP68-rated light weighs between just 1.6 kg and 2.5 kg.

“The innovative technology used in the 6036 series gives it an expected life span of up to 100 000 hours under normal conditions, or 80 000 hours at 60 °C,” states R Stahl.

The LED tube light is also considered extremely light efficient, with the overall power consumption only about half that of a conventional box-type unit, which significantly reduces operating expenses. The company states that the LED tube light is as bright as two conventional 36 W fluorescent tubes, but consumes 33% less power.

The 6036 series comes in 28 W, with a luminous flux equal to 2 715 lm at 107 lm/W; 38 W, with a luminous flux of 3 947 lm at 107 lm/W; and 49 W, with a luminous flux of 5 263 lm at 109 lm/W.

R Stahl, which operates internationally, supplies its products in South Africa through its local partner, Esaco, based in Johannesburg, Gauteng.

Esaco sales manager Roman Panis jnr believes there is significant potential for the use of the 6036 series light fitting in the South African mining industry. It can be used for long-wall and short-wall lighting, as well as general lighting, gangway lighting and machinery lighting.

“The 6036 series is not just a new product to the African market, but a complete new design of lighting for the hazardous market worldwide,” says Panis.

The 6036 series is certified for above surface and underground industries, boasting IECEx (global), ATEX (European) and IA (South African) certification.

R Stahl notes on its website that it has, for more than 80 years, fulfilled a unique role in protecting lives and property in harsh and hazardous (classified) locations. “Whether you are looking to expand your business to global markets, or don’t have time to custom design each system particular to where it is going in the world, R Stahl can help.” With its universal package of products, clients can specify one product for anywhere in the world, whether it be Angola, Russia, Europe, Brazil or Houston, the company states that its products will meet the required standards.
