Energy solutions provider Siemens Energy Service held its energy service open day at its 4 900 m2 Wadeville factory, in Johannesburg, last month to inform customers about and present to them the capabilities of the company’s service facility.

“It was an opportunity to showcase what we do and to give our customers the satisfaction of witnessing the quality and performance we produce at our workshop,” said Siemens Energy Service divisional financial director Roger Kneidel.

The Siemens Energy Service Wadeville factory provides its own branded products and power generation mechanical services. It also manufactures turbo-machinery and spare parts for mining and industrial-type machines and power stations.

Siemens Energy Service’s clients at the open day included representatives from State-owned power utility Eskom, petrochemicals giant Sasol and platinum miner Impala Platinum.

Siemens Energy Service head of business development Anesu Chivete said the open day provided a great opportunity for customers to see the extent of Siemens’ work in the power generation, mining and industrial sectors.

Clients were taken on a factory tour by Siemens Energy Service representatives and were provided with an inside look into the operations of the company.

“Customers also met the team behind the services they receive,” said Chivete.

The factory, which has been operating for 20 years, also offers modernisation and upgrades, refurbishments and efficiency improvements.

Kneidel added that the company was satisfied with its operations and services and that it had become a high-quality and efficient workshop.

Further, as part of its commitment to high-quality service and products, Siemens Energy Service technicians are dispatched overseas to receive training on the latest technology, which is then presented to customers.

African Expansion
Siemens has opened a new office in Maputo, Mozambique, to stay abreast of the rapid economic growth of the country and to better support the needs of its customers.

Some of the members of the German business delegation to Maputo at the Siemens office inauguration event last month were the Ministry of Economics and Technology State Secretary Anne Ruth Herkes, Foreign Affairs State Secretary Harald Braun and Siemens Africa CEO Siegmar Proebstl.

Siemens has been active in Mozambique since the 1950s and has a local presence and significant knowledge of the local market; therefore, the company believes that it is ideally positioned to play a major role in Mozambique’s growth.

“Siemens will continue to invest in rapidly growing African economies to meet our targets for profitable growth. Mozambique is a focus country on the continent for the company,” says Proebstl.

He adds that Siemens delivers integrated technology solutions to improve the efficiency and productivity of its customers in Mozambique, which will help to meet the country’s urgent needs in the areas of energy, mobility, urban infrastructure, mining, industry and healthcare.

Meanwhile, the Siemens Energy Sector has completed various projects, including the rehabilitation of rural networks, for the country’s State-owned power utility Electricidade de Mocambique. This has made it possible for people in the region’s remotest areas to access electricity.

The Siemens industry sector is heavily involved in providing automation equip-ment, control systems, drives and motors to various customers in industries as diverse as metals and mining and petroleum, among others.

Further, Siemens Mozambique is a major player in the healthcare market, as it provides medical equipment and maintenance for hospitals and rural clinics throughout the country.

The team in Maputo works closely with Siemens South Africa and the company’s extended Africa network to meet the requirements of customers across all sectors of the Mozambique industry.

The Siemens employment policy in Mozambique gives preference to local resources and the company provides training to enhance the skills base of the local office, while contributing to the country’s economic growth.

In 1951, Siemens commissioned the first centralised traffic control system in Africa on the railway line between the capital city of Maputo and the border town of Ressano Garcia.

In the energy sector, Siemens commis-sioned the world’s first long-distance, thyristor-operated high-voltage direct current transmission system, between Cabora Bassa power plant and South Africa, in 1975.
