JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – TSX- and JSE-listed Eastern Platinum (Eastplats) has suspended operations at its Crocodile River Mine (CRM) in South Africa, following a fatal accident at the Zandfontein section on Monday.

CEO Ian Rozier said that an employee of engineering company High Point Trading, doing development work at CRM, was fatally injured in a blasting accident at an ore pass development raise.

The Department of Mineral Resources has issued a Section 54 ‘Stop Work’ order and mining operations at CRM have been stopped, pending a full investigation by the Inspector of Mines.

"This is terrible news for the families affected and also for the company. Management had made health and safety a key priority at CRM and we were making substantial progress in this regard, having recorded 3.8-million fatality-free shifts at the mine until yesterday,” Rozier said.
