Engineering solutions company Bearing Man Group (BMG) launched a new portable condition-monitoring device, Leonova Diamond, in January this year, which is designed for accurate analysis, with diagnostic and troubleshooting capabilities in harsh environments.

The device is manufactured by machine condition monitoring products manufacturer Shock Pulse Method (SPM) Instrument.

“The Leonova Diamond offers advanced slow-speed capabilities in a single and portable instrument. This device is not just a predictive maintenance tool – it can also perform corrective maintenance, such as fast and easy machine alignment and balancing,” says BMG condition-monitoring manager Pieter van Zyl.

The Leonova Diamond instrument provides a combination of well-proved measuring techniques and supporting diagnostics for every situation and has also been designed for reliable and cost-effective maintenance, as well as extended service life in the most demanding circumstances.

“Up-to-date information on a machine’s status is an important factor in pro-maintenance. Shock pulse monitoring using the SPM HD method gives early warning of bearing deterioration, which is the most common cause of machine failure. The Leonova Diamond instrument measures the vibration velocity, acceleration and displacement according to the latest ISO 10816 standards,” he says.

BMG’s portfolio of SPM condition-monitor- ing equipment extends from basic hand-held instruments, to high-level online systems. These products are designed for users at every level, from new operators to advanced vibration analysts.

The Leonova Diamond has a signal-to-noise ratio, which provides sharp signals, even in areas where signals are normally weak and low in energy content. The instrument has advanced tracking functionality and measures a machine’s condition in the 1 rpm to 20 000 rpm range. The wide frequency range of between 0 kHz to 40 kHz enables reliable measurement where absolute position is final, states BMG.

“This instrument is also used in machines with journal bearings, to measure the dynamic and centreline movement of the shaft. The multichannel measurement of the instrument enables the use of triaxial transducers and multi-axes vibration monitoring. Measuring routines that were previously lengthy are now quickly and efficiently conducted,” he adds.

In machinery operating under variable speed(s), vibration analysis with HD order-tracking provides reliable data and accurate measuring results, even under large rpm varia- tions. The sampling rate is automatically and continuously adjusted to the current speed, which enables more accurate measurements and more detailed spectrums, which were not possible before.

An intrinsically safe version of the Leonova Diamond instrument will be launched locally in the second half of this year. This version is a designed modular software, which will support the Leonova Diamond and will provide an easy set-up of personalised default settings in catering to user requirements.

SPM Instruments

SPM Instrument has over 40 years of experience with machine condition monitoring and close cooperation with its customers in all fields of industry. SPM has qualified sales and service representatives in more than 50 countries look forward to helping out.

SPM offers a wide product range from high-tech portable instruments to online systems and a comprehensive software. SPM’s intelligent solutions is cost-effective, constructive and complete. It is an excellent foundation for a proactive approach to maintenance, integrated in a plant’s normal maintenance activities and providing it with an overall picture. On the company’s request, SPM will put together the monitoring equipment package best suited to the mine’s economic and technical requirements.

SPM equipment detects fault conditions well in time for planned maintenance and repairs, causing none or minimal interruption of the production process. Immediate and evaluated condition information is presented as green – yellow – red condition codes for instant and easy recognition of trouble spots. This greatly improves the effectiveness of available staff resources.

The monitoring methods include Evaluated Vibration Analysis Method with fast fourier transform spectrum, enveloping and root mean square vibration, the SPM and SPM Spectrum HD detailed bearing analysis, which are all developed by SPM. For correc- tive maintenance, SPM offer methods for alignment and balancing.

BMG states that its portfolio of SPM condition-monitoring equipment extends from basic hand-held instruments, to high level on-line systems. These products are designed for users at every level – new operators, as well as advanced vibration analysts. Corrective maintenance techniques, including shaft alignment and dynamic balancing, can be added to this instrument as optional modules.
