Company receives large order from Namibia

Geared mills manufacturer ABB Switzerland reports that it has secured a large order for variable-speed drives (VSDs) for a mill at the Namibia-based Husab uranium mine.

The N$20-billion greenfield project, which is operated by Swakop Uranium, is expected to become the third-largest uranium mine in the world, with production potential of 6 800 t of uranium oxide a year, more than the total current uranium production of Namibia.

ABB’s scope of supply comprises four VSD systems with asynchronous motors, ACS6000 frequency converters with mill application controller, transformers, medium-voltage cubicles and system engineering and spare parts for two 6.75 MW semiautogenous mills, and two 4.25 MW ball mills.

“ABB’s variable-speed ring-geared mill drive solutions are designed for reliable, long-life and low-maintenance operation. The proven technology increases the efficiency of the grinding process, which makes it ideal for ores with varying grinding properties. In addition to high system efficiency, availability and process reliability, the VSD also provides significant energy and operating cost savings by using less electricity than a conventional fixed-speed mill drive,” the company states.

The contract was awarded in May with first deliveries scheduled for the first quarter of next year.

The mineralisation grade of the granite-hosted uranium at the Husab project is considered one of the world’s most significant mineral discoveries in decades, according to ABB.

Speaking at the mine’s ground-breaking ceremony in April, Swakop Uranium CEO Zheng Keping noted that the mine would elevate Namibia past Niger, Australia and Canada to the second rung on the world ladder of uranium producers.

“The 8 km uranium mineralisation has been confirmed as the highest-grade granite-hosted uranium deposit in Namibia, and one of the world’s most signi- ficant discoveries in decades,” he added.

The mine, which will create 2 000 permanent jobs and up to 6 000 temporary jobs during the construction phase, will be developed as a large-scale conventional openpit mine. With uranium reserves of more than 280-million tons, it has an estimated life span of more than 20 years.

It also has opportunities to increase the reserve base by adding defined resources at Zones 3 to 5, and through building on promis- ing exploration results. The Husab mine, which is based in the Erongo region in western- central Namibia, will take roughly three years to build, with commissioning activities expected to start in the third quarter of 2015.
