In response to the high incidences of workplace injuries, mining services company Group R Mining & Exploration runs training courses and safe work procedures workshops to assist its clients in empowering their workers to prevent workplace injuries, says company director Hein van Staden.

“A lost-time injury (LTI) is any injury that prevents a permanent staff member or contractor from reporting to work for the next shift or the following day,” he explains, adding that it is important for the underground mining industry to start implementing mechanised mining methods, as they help prevent injuries.

He says Group R offers training courses and safe work procedures that are in line with its clients’ safe-working structures. The company’s clients include joint venture company Carlisa Investments Corporation’s Mopani Copper Mines.

”At Group R we aim to use only the right equipment and to combine our top-notch fleet with safe behaviour procedures and a positive attitude towards safety from all our employees,” says Van Staden.

He adds that the company empowers every person that works on site to ensure that, “while an LTI-free day must be the norm, it is a journey, not a target; every day requires the same dedication”.

Van Staden says, while the company has achieved 300 LTI-free days, its next milestone is 500 LTI-free days and staff and management are confident that they will achieve it.

Group R Mining & Exploration is owned by private equity investment firm AO Holdings. The company started its African operations with a turnkey underground development and mining contract in Mali on behalf of gold miner Randgold Resources. The company has since grown into a key role-player in mechanised underground mining in Zambia and is currently establishing operations in Botswana.

Group R aims to provide specialised technical mining services on contract to all types of mines across Africa, including major diamond, gold, platinum and copper mines.

Van Staden adds that some of the company’s major clients for the past five years have included diversified metals and mining company Vedanta Resources.

The company has a diversified skills set and vast experience in areas such as mass mining, remote area mobilisation and civil engineering services to underground mines.

“We strive to provide added value and benefits to clients and believe in both a long- and short-term vision. As such, we seek to build ongoing quality relationships with clients based on a mutually beneficial partnership,” concludes Van Staden.
