Unit process design and supply company MC Process Global introduced the Elgin Equipment Group (EEG) range of coal mining technologies onto the South African market at the end of last year and states that it has received a good response from the local coal industry.

The EEG range is available worldwide and was developed in Saint Louis, Missouri, US. It includes the Centrifugal Mechanical Industries (CMI) centrifuge range, of which MC Process Global sold its first unit to mining company Fraser Alexander towards the end of 2012.

The unit will be installed at one of the company’s new plants near Witbank, in Mpumalanga, by the end of March, states MC Process South Africa CEO Mark Craddock.

The units impart little vibra- tion to building structures during operation, he highlights, owing to improved design innovations over the years.

They also feature low cost ownership, owing to the absence of the separate oil lubrica- tion systems, which have been problematic, as the bearing units are permanently sealed, Craddock notes.

He adds that the technology’s screen baskets are supported in an independent frame basket, reducing opex, as the support structure is not discarded with every screen change.

MC Process Global also markets the other equipment in the EEG range, such as the proven CSI, Centrifugal Services rotary breakers and Tabor screens.
“The CSI rotary breaker has significant engineering and technological design features and benefits that we know will place it at the top of any engineer’s selection list,” Craddock notes.

These units have a significant role to play in reducing coal fines production and are effi- cient size-reduction tools in the coal industry, owing to the immediate removal of the sized coal after the desired size is achieved, thus eliminating further coal degradation.

Further, Craddock says that MC Process Global has supplied more than 20 coal tailings thickeners and 17 automated flocculant plants to coal mines worldwide.

“One piece of equipment that has proved to be a stalwart and cash generator for collieries is the robust Teetered Bed Separator (TBS), which uses density and stokes law to cost effectively upgrade fine coal,” he states, highlighting that this machine is reliable and cost effective, as it can handle vast variations in feed size and feed volumes.

TBS technologies can upgrade low-quality feed coal in the –3 mm size range and produce a high-quality product that reduces the need for over- washing the coarser material, he adds.

It also does not need operator intervention, causes little or no downtime and is very forgiving to oversized feed and changes in the feed conditions.

Acid Mine Drainage
Meanwhile, MC Process Global states that it has undertaken extensive work on acid mine drainage (AMD). The company’s water division, Scientific Water, has been testing dissolved air flotation (DAF) on tailings return water at a large colliery near Witbank, with encouraging results.

“Our ongoing research indicates that DAF and electrocoagulation will prove to the most viable cost-effective solution to the AMD problem,” states Craddock.

In September 2012, the company installed two DAF units at a coal mine near Vereeniging, in Gauteng. The units treat about 3.8 Mℓ/d of reverse osmosis plant feed and removes oil and grease contaminants from the feed water, preventing fouling of the membranes.

Craddock says MC Process Global has a passion for the coal industry.
