Companies eager to reap fruits of Mozambique’s coal reserves

Mozambique’s promising geography and geology have become internationally known. Lying on Africa’s south-east coast, it is in a prime position to ship coal to hungry and growing Asian markets, such as India and China.

Its north-western Tete province is believed to hold one of the world’s largest untapped coal reserves that producers compare with Australia’s coal-rich Bowen basin.

An International Monetary Fund report showed that about $3-billion has been injected into Mozambique over the past five years, with analysts predicting that this fugure is likely to multi- ply as the war-scarred country goes out of its way to attract foreign investment.

Depicted are some coal projects in Tete currently in the preproduction stage.
