World weather is changing in a way that is revealing nature’s power, attendees of the Tenth Oppenheimer Research Conference heard this month, when former mining luminary Nicky Oppenheimer emphasised the importance of working with Nature through climate-positive action. Oppenheimer (right) and Mining Weekly editor Martin Creamer (left) are seen at Randjiesfontein, the venue of the well-attended conference at which Environment Minister Barbara Creecy stated that 450000 people are employed in the biodiversity economy, the same number as in South African mining. Oppenheimer Generations awarded Dr Hayley Clements the inaugural Jennifer Ward Oppenheimer Research Grant worth $150 000, for her research on Quantifying the Biodiversity Planetary Boundary for Africa.
