TORONTO (miningweekly.com) – Base-metals producer Breakwater Resources reached a tentative agreement on Monday with the union that represents hourly employees at its Myra Falls mine, in British Columbia, Canada.
The agreement will be put to union members for ratification later in the week, the company said,
The collective bargaining agreement at Myra Falls expired on September 30, and workers served the company with a 72-hour strike notice on November 4.
Reuters reported that workers had planned to down tools on Tuesday if no deal was reached.
Breakwater also reported on Monday that it expects repairs to areas affected by a fire last week at Myra Falls will take about ten days.
A fire occurred on November 4 in the electrical switchgear for the production hoist, damaging the switch gear and rendering the production hoist unusable.
Site management has now developed a plan to have a new electrical switch gear manufactured and delivered to the site, the company said.
It will take about ten days to manufacture, transport and install the electrical switch gear.
Besides Myra Falls, Breakwater also produces zinc and copper concentrate from the El Mochito mine in Honduras and the El Toqui mine in Chile.
Its Langlois mine in Quebec is currently on temporary care-and-maintenance.
