PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Kenya-focused mineral sands miner Base Resources has reported record sales volumes across all of its products for the three months to June, while operating costs declined.

During the quarter, some 121 727 t of ilmenite, 25 382 t of rutile and 7 621 t of zircon were sold. The record sales volumes were achieved on the back of consistent production from the Kwale operation, which produced 206 123 t of heavy minerals concentrate, compared with the 206 324 t produced in the previous quarter.

Some 2.33-million tonnes of ore were mined during the quarter, up from the 2.29-million tonnes in the previous quarter, to produce 113 476 t of ilmenite, 19 499 t of rutile and 6 484 t of zircon.

Cash operating costs for the quarter declined from the $14.2-million reported in the March quarter to $13.5-million, with cash costs per tonne declining from $111/t to $97/t during the period, owing to the combination of lower total costs and higher production volumes in the quarter.

Operating costs in the coming quarter were expected to increase owing to the mid-life servicing of the mobile mining fleet.

Meanwhile, for the financial year ended June, Base produced 751 285 t of heavy minerals concentrate, containing 427 655 t of ilmenite, 71 537 t of rutile and 22 416 t of zircon.
